Typhoon Haiyan: Rebuilding Project Underway

December 30, 2013

Rebuilding in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) is now underway in Leyte, Philippines. The first project has our United Church of God crew rebuilding the family home of Gerald Misigal. It’s a joint venture by Good Works and LifeNets.

Thank you to all who are working together to help those who lost their homes. This is just the beginning of our rebuilding efforts for our brethren in Leyte affected by super-typhoon Yolanda.

We are very pleased to report that donations to the Good Works Philippines Disaster Relief fund (now at almost $100,000) are very encouraging and will help greatly in restoring the living conditions of our brethren there.

Please take a moment to view a video interview with Gerald Misigal and see his home being rebuilt by UCG volunteers. The video was put together by the Philippine office.

Roy Holladay Confirmed as Ministerial Operation Manager

December 12, 2013

United Church of God Council of Elders confirms Roy Holladay

as Operation Manager of Ministerial and Member Services

Long-time pastor and administrator to move to Ohio in January

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Following the recommendation of Church President Victor Kubik, the Council of Elders of the United Church of God confirmed the appointment of Roy Holladay, 73, as operation manager for Ministerial and Member Services December 11.

“I have had the privilege of working with Mr. Holladay in various capacities for many years,” said Mr. Kubik. “He brings several decades of service to an important position both as a field minister and a senior administrator, and I’m very much looking forward to having him here again in Cincinnati on the team.”

“While he has many years of ministerial service in administrative positions, Roy Holladay has often been described as a servant with the heart of a pastor,” said Robin Webber. “While we know that he and his wife Norma were very content serving brethren in the greater Chattanooga [Tennessee] area and working as an advisor on the Ministerial and Member Services team, we’re grateful that he will be coming back to Cincinnati for another tour of duty.”

Both Mr. Kubik and Mr. Webber noted that Mr. Holladay had served the United Church of God in administrative and Council positions during what Mr. Webber described as “trying times, but also in a period of holding fast to biblical truth.” Mr. Kubik said that he is looking forward to working with Mr. Holladay “now in both a time of peace and a time of commitment to help strengthen our brethren and fashion a time of spiritual growth for all.”

Mr. Holladay said he was “humbled” by the appointment and that he was looking forward to working full-time again with Mr. Kubik. “I feel like the last number of years have been a time of growth for me personally,” Mr. Holladay said. “My and Norma’s faith in the fact that Jesus Christ is the true Leader and Head of the Church has been strengthened. We believe that we as a Church will be blessed as we all follow His lead.”

Mr. and Mrs. Holladay have served congregations in Pittsburg and Uniontown, Pennsylvania; Akron and Toledo, Ohio; Charleston and Wheeling, West Virginia; Big Sandy, San Antonio, Austin, Corpus Christi, Uvalde, and the Rio Grande Valley, Texas; Arlington, Chicago North and Hinsdale, Illinois; Richmond and Norfolk Virginia; Texarkana, Arkansas; St. Petersburg, New Port Richey, Fort Myers, Miami, and West Palm Beach, Florida; and most recently Chattanooga and Rome, Georgia. In addition to serving different terms as president of the United Church of God and chairman of the Council of Elders, Mr. Holladay served in a variety of senior positions, including serving as a senior pastor in 1976, as a regional pastor from 1992-1998, and as the Festival coordinator for Mount Pocono and in St. Petersburg for 10 years (1983-1994).

A 1963 graduate of Ambassador College (Pasadena), Mr. Holladay was ordained on the day of Pentecost in 1964. Mr. and Mrs. Holladay have five sons, five daughters-in-law and 13 grandchildren who live across the continent—California, Texas, Washington and Canada.

Mr. Holladay will assume his new role immediately and complete the transition to moving back to Cincinnati in January.

Statement About the Death of Sheryl Meredith

November 30, 2013

“It is with sadness that the Council of Elders, the staff and the members of the United Church of God note the death of Sheryl Meredith, the long-time wife and spiritual partner of Roderick C. Meredith,” said Victor Kubik, president of the United Church of God. “We all join with members of the Living Church of God in renewed prayer that God’s Kingdom come soon, marking the future happy and joyous time when Mrs. Meredith and many thousands like her will be resurrected as the literal children of God into an everlasting Kingdom.”

Mr. Kubik and his wife Beverly plan to attend the December 4th funeral of Mrs. Meredith in North Carolina as representatives of the United Church of God.

Mr. Kubik noted that the death of Mrs. Meredith was “especially poignant, given the fact that Dennis Luker had died in the faith less than a year ago.” Following the death of long-time minister and mutual friend Dibar Apartian, Mr. Luker, then the president of United, visited the headquarters of the Living Church of God before Mr. Luker’s death. Dr. Meredith had worked closely together with Mr. Luker on a number of occasions in their prior shared fellowship.

Prior to the death of Mrs. Meredith, Mr. Kubik had discussed the possibility of the Living Church of God and the United Church of God jointly providing aid to Church members afflicted by the recent typhoon in the Philippines. “We agreed to work together and it is now more fitting than ever that this joint effort should move forward,” Mr. Kubik said.
